World Ozone Day Celebration - 2018
Keep Cool and Carry On : Montreal Protocol

Sri Lanka Celebrated the World Ozone Day at the Bandaranaike International Memorial Hall (BMICH) Colombo on 17th September 2018 under the patronage of His Excellency Maithripala Sirisena, the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the Minister of the Mahaweli Development and Environment with the participation of the Hon. Ajith Mannapperuma, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment. There were many distinguished participants participated including officials from Government and Non-government institutes, UN Agencies, Officials from AC/Ref Sector, Implementing Agencies and education sector including School Children and Students from Technical Colleges as well. Extensive media coverage has been arranged as promotional activity of the celebration.

Our Mission...
To fulfill the commitments under the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer to Protect the Ozone Layer by phasing out Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) in Sri Lanka.
To integrate Ozone Layer protection in to the countries planning process, with minimum inconvenience to industry and the general public taking into consideration of Global environment, Legal requirement & economic aspects of the country.
Instigate activities to maintain and strengthen the institutional framework in protection of the Ozone Layer in Sri Lanka.

Project at a Glance..

National Ozone Unit (NOU) was established under the Ministry of Environment in Sri Lanka, which is the national focal point for the Montreal Protocol (MP) in 1994, with the approval of the Institutional Strengthening (IS). The projects of the NOU operate directly under the Secretary, Ministry of Environment in Sri Lanka who is the National Project Director and the ....



Director, NOU who is the Coordinator of Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer to Protect the Ozone Layer by phasing out Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) in Sri Lanka, coordinating international and national activities related to phasing out Ozone Depleting substances with the targets given by the Montreal Protocol. The Director is from Lanka Administrative Services (SLAS) and appointed by the Sri Lankan Governmet.


The Ministry has provided a space for the office and eligible officers who can handle the activities in the unit. The NOU has grown with time by obtaining fund through other projects and recruiting qualified people to assist the different projects under the guidance of Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and the Director, NOU with support of the UNDP. At present the Unit has projects funded by Multi Lateral Fund (MLF) through implementing agencies such as UNDP & UNEP.....
